Mapping The North

The keystone, if you like, of the rest of the site.

The Intention: To document the European and other non-Aboriginal exploration of the North.

While acknowledging the indigenous exploration of the land the First Peoples occupied, they left no documentary record to weave into a conventional history.

Such matters are best dealt with in the On the Surface: The Human Landscape section of Origins, Indigenes and Antecedents

Here, the focus is on the Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, English, French and Australian exploration.

Prelude: Towards An Outline fits the pre-settlement exploration of the area into a global and continental perspective.

Six Voyages: Maritime expeditions that produced an outline of Queensland's northern coast.

Adding Detail: The European exploration of The North between 1788 and Queensland's Separation from New South Wales on 6 June 1859.

Northern Queensland: Following Separation, the settlement of the Kennedy Pastoral District begins filling in the blank spaces on the map of The North.
